How Government Examination Age Cut-Off Dates Work in India
In Central and State Government recruitment notifications (conducted by SSC, UPSC, Railway RRBs, IBPS, and State PSCs), the age of an applicant is never measured on the date they fill out the application form. Instead, notifications designate a Crucial Date / Cut-Off Date (निर्णायक तिथि) for determining age eligibility:
- The 1st August Rule: Under Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines, examinations whose Tier-1 or Preliminary exams are held in the second half of the calendar year normally have 1st August of that year as their crucial eligibility date (e.g., 01-08-2025 for SSC CGL / CHSL / UPSC Civil Services).
- The 1st January Rule: For recruitment cycles advertised or conducted in the first half of the year, the cut-off date is standardly 1st January of that exam year.
- State Police & Defense Cut-Offs: State Police Recruitments (UP Police, Rajasthan Police, Bihar Police) frequently adopt 1st July as their benchmark date.

How Our Precise Calendar Algorithm Calculates Age
Calculating exact age between two calendar dates is more complex than simple division because different months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and leap years include 366 days:
- Days Borrowing Logic: When the target day is smaller than the birth day, the algorithm automatically borrows the exact number of days in the previous month (considering whether February had 28 or 29 days in that specific calendar year).
- Months Borrowing Logic: When the target month is smaller than the birth month, the calculation borrows 12 months from the target year.
- Leap Year Precision: A person born on 29th February in a leap year is mathematically and legally treated as reaching their next year of age on 1st March in non-leap years.
